Healthy Fruit For A Healthy Diet

Some people are quite ignorant when it comes to the health benefits one could get from fruits and vegetables. I remembered the hoopla in 2006 surrounding Jay Leno when he made an irresponsible comment that as he has not had fruits and vegetables since 1969, there is actually no need for them. He could have not been more wrong as he could not be considered a leading authority on nutrition anyway- definitely not with his expanding waist line and countless researches and studies have already proven the wonderful benefits we could get from fruits and vegetables.

So how could one know if such a thing can be considered a healthy fruit? Fruits like plums, apricots and peaches should be wrinkle-free, blemish-free, firm and unbruised. They are usually best eaten a day or two after purchase when they are just perfectly ripe. Supermarkets usually order them when they are still unripe as their shelf life tends to be short. Once already ripe and you still have some fruits left, put them inside the fridge so you can still enjoy them.

Grapes, blackberries, raspberries and other berries should have no discoloration or molds. They should be plump looking as well. This kind of fruits can be eaten immediately as they are usually ripe when you purchase them from supermarkets. If you want to make them last longer, do not wash them with water before putting them in plastic bags with holes which would allow the fruit to breathe.

For blueberries though you need to pick those with a rich purplish-blue-black color with some white color on top. Blueberries, when put inside a plastic wrap, can last up to a week inside the fridge.

There are only a few tips that you need to follow when you want to buy fruits.. Never buy fruits that have shrunk or full of wrinkles as they are sure signs that what you are seeing is not a healthy fruit.
